Dry Farming Research Station
Introduction: |
The problems of crop production in the rainfall areas of the arid and semi arid regions revealed that an acute ecological imbalance of the components of productivity is responsible for limiting the consistency of remunerative crop production in these regions. Harsh and unfavorable climatic conditions results in unstable, low and unremunerative yield levels. In order to meet the challenges and the vagaries of monsoon and to evolve suitable technology to minimize such risk and stabilize production potential in the dry farming area of Gujarat state, research on dry farming started in 1958.
Mandate : |
1. To screen and evaluate the varieties of high yielding potential, better grain quality and tolerance to different biotic and abiotic stress.
2. To develop location specific production technology.
3. To act as testing centre for multilocational trials of dry farming technology. Seed production programme of high yielding varieties.
Objectives : |
(A) Dry Farming Research Scheme :
1. To develop the package of practices of rainfed crops.
2. To identify suitable crop and their varieties for their yield potential in rainfed area of the region.
3. To produce breeder and improved seeds of major crops of this region.
(B) National Agricultural Research Project :
1. To strengthen the dry farming research scheme.

Crop improvement :
1. Testing of newly developed genotypes under different categories of trials viz; SSVHT, LST, LSVHT, SST.
2. Seed multiplication of different varieties on large scale to cater the need of various seed production agencies.
Resource Management :
1. To evaluate crop sequence and nutrient management in respect to sustain agriculture and soil health under rainfed condition.
2. Integrated nutrient management in bajra crop.
3. Nutrient management practices for sustaining groundnut yield and soil productivity.
4. Fertilizer management in cotton+sesamum (1:1) intercropping system under dry farming conditions.
5. Integrated weed management in important crops of this region.
Transfer of Technologies : |
The agricultural technology developed at this research station is being provided to the farmers of this region and students in the following ways.
1. Providing information to the farmers in Krishi mahotsav by personal visit of the villages.
2. Educating students and farmers coming to this station during education tour.
3. By participation in Krishi shibir like activities.

Research Recommendation - 2018-19
The farmers of North Saurashtra Agro-climatic Zone growing groundnut during kharif season are recommended to keep their crop weed free through hand weeding and interculturing at 15, 30, 45 and 60 DAS or apply Quizalofop-ethyl 40 g/ha at 20 DAS fb IC & HW at 40 DAS for effective weed management as well as to obtain higher yield and net return.
