The College of Agriculture, Junagadh started in the month of June, 1960 with the admission capacity of 100 students. It was housed in a palatial building at Sardar Baug. The buildings viz., Mangal Niwas, Hussain Kacheri, Fancy Baug, Uma vilas etc. were used as the hostels for accommodating the students.
The college, which started in the final year of the second Five Year Plan, was the first Government Agricultural College in the Gujarat State. It was vested with the heavy responsibilities of looking after the research for the entire state in different disciplines. One redeeming feature of the college was that all the Professors of the college were the Subject Matter Specialists (SMS) in their respective subjects at the state level and they had to look after the research aspects of their disciplines for the whole state. They had to have rapport with Government of India for the problems of agriculture in their respective fields. On the other hand, they also established a permanent linkage with farmers so as to familiarise them with the latest scientific developments in agriculture and also to get a feed back in order to enable scientists to plan their future research programmes.
|
|
In fact, the triple responsibilities of teaching, research and extension education carried out by the college, made it a foremost center for integration of all these important activities. This fits well within the present concept of land grant colleges of USA, the pattern of which has been more or less accepted by Agricultural Universities in India.
The syllabus of the college followed a pattern, which was almost identical with other sister agricultural colleges in India. The college was affiliated to Gujarat University, Ahmedabad from its inception till the year 1967. Subsequently, on inception of Saurashtra University in 1968 at Rajkot, the affiliation was transferred to it.
With the advancement of the educational programmes to the full degree course, as also with the commencement of postgraduate programme and the expansion of different activities of the college, the authorities, therefore, decided to develop the entire complex at newly selected site at Junagadh Vanthali Road on a center point with Motibaug, Cattle Breeding Farm, Sagdividi Farm and Gramsevak Training Center as its four extremities.
With the inception of Gujarat Agricultural University as an autonomous body in 1972, a new era commenced in the history of college when it was transferred to the university with all the activities so far carried out by the Department of Agriculture. It thus, became a constituent college of the Gujarat Agricultural University.
A large number of graduates and Post graduates of College of Agriculture, Junagadh have occupied higher ranks in different departments such as Agriculture, Forest, Police, Customs, Institutions, Corporations, Administrative Services, Banking Services, Pesticides, Fertilizers and Seed Industries, etc. Some of the Alumni of this college also reached to the rank of Vice chancellor and Director of Campus of Gujarat Agricultural University, Director of Agriculture, Minister of Agriculture in the State of Gujarat. They have significant contributions in upliftment of Agriculture. Moreover, the information regarding to graduate and postgraduate degree awarded to students from 1964 to 2004 by GAU and 2005 to 2009 by JAU are given as under.
